NIMC Dismisses Viral Video’s NIN Database Breach Claims As False

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has denied claims that its National Identity Database (NIDB) has been breached, describing allegations in a viral video circulating on social media as false and unfounded. In a Wednesday statement signed by Head of Corporate Communications Kayode Adegoke, NIMC said the video is a recycled report from 2024 that had already been disclaimed by the commission.

The commission stated categorically that its NIDB has not been breached or compromised at any point, saying it maintains robust, multi-layered security infrastructure to protect the personal data of every registered citizen and legal resident in line with international best practice. NIMC said it views the circulation of such unverified claims with concern given their capacity to mislead the public and cause unnecessary panic, urging Nigerians to disregard the video and rely only on NIMC’s official channels for information.

NIMC also highlighted its recently launched NIN Authentication (NINAuth) platform, which provides web, API and mobile verification services for SIM registration, immigration, passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions without unnecessarily exposing raw NIN data. The commission said the initiative supports compliance with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, and that it would continue working with security and government agencies to strengthen its systems and combat misinformation.
