The House of Representatives has moved to address arbitrary increases in tuition and other charges by universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Lawmakers raised concerns over the financial pressure placed on students and their families by rising education costs, calling for greater regulation and transparency in the determination of institutional fees.

Concerns surrounding sudden and unjustified fee increases have continued to grow, particularly among students from low-income families. The lawmakers stressed that institutions should comply with approved guidelines and ensure that additional charges do not make tertiary education inaccessible.
Relevant education authorities and stakeholders are expected to engage on measures to regulate institutional charges and prevent unwarranted increases. The initiative is aimed at promoting greater accountability in the management of fees across the tertiary education sector.
With students and parents already facing rising education-related expenses, the House said efforts to control excessive charges would help make higher education more affordable and accessible to Nigerians.
