The Federal Government has declared Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 3, 2026, as National Learning Assessment (NLA) Week ahead of Nigeria’s first-ever nationwide learning assessment exercise.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo.
According to the ministry, the assessment is aimed at generating reliable data on learners’ academic performance to support educational planning, policy formulation, resource allocation, and improved learning outcomes across the country.
The government clarified that the exercise is strictly diagnostic and will not be used for promotion, placement, or certification of learners.

Preparations for the assessment began in 2025 through a partnership between the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank. Assessment tools have been developed, tested, and personnel trained for the exercise.
The assessment will be conducted in selected schools across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory and will involve pupils in Primary Three, Primary Five, Junior Secondary School Two (JS2), and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2).
Subjects to be assessed include English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, as well as Citizenship and Heritage Studies.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the exercise as a major step toward strengthening accountability and improving learning outcomes through evidence-based decision-making.
The Federal Government expressed confidence that the assessment will provide credible data needed to drive reforms and improve the quality of education nationwide.
