Tinubu Launches Training Programme for 5,000 Youths Under Presidential Metering Initiative

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) as part of efforts to create jobs and improve the country’s electricity sector.

In a post on his official X page on Thursday, the President said the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, with youth employment remaining one of his administration’s top priorities.

According to Tinubu, the programme, known as The Power Force, is designed to close Nigeria’s metering gap, eliminate estimated billing, protect electricity consumers and enhance the efficiency of the power sector.

He explained that participants would receive practical technical training and be linked to employment opportunities within the electricity industry.

“This programme is about jobs, skills and dignity. It will equip young Nigerians with practical technical skills and connect them to real work in a sector that touches every home, every business and every community in our country,” the President said.

Tinubu disclosed that the programme is open to Nigerians who have completed secondary school education, with a dedicated quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He noted that increasing the number of properly metered homes and businesses would promote transparency in electricity billing, improve revenue collection by distribution companies and support investments in better electricity services.

The President added that the initiative would help build a more efficient and sustainable electricity market that benefits consumers, investors and the nation’s economy.

Tinubu said he has directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to work with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and other relevant stakeholders to begin implementing the programme within the next 30 days.

He also encouraged qualified young Nigerians to seize the opportunity and acquire skills that would enhance their employment prospects while contributing to the development of Nigeria’s power sector.
