Flooding Displaces Residents, Submerges Homes in Delta Community

Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in parts of Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, displacing residents and submerging homes and property.

Following the incident, the Delta State Government has commenced an assessment of the affected areas to determine the extent of the damage and identify communities requiring urgent intervention.

The Commissioner for Bureau of Special Duties, Ejiro Terry Etacherure, led the State Emergency Management Team on an inspection of the affected communities on Monday. He sympathised with residents and said the government would consider immediate relief measures while working towards lasting solutions to recurring flooding in the area.

Etacherure, however, urged residents to support government efforts by keeping their surroundings clean and avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse or construction on waterways. He directed the Environmental Department of the Ethiope West Local Government Council to begin sensitisation campaigns and clear blocked drainage channels.

Residents said the flooding had become severe, with several houses submerged and families forced to evacuate. Community representative Edafe Abada appealed for urgent government intervention, including improved drainage infrastructure and assistance for affected households.

The state government said the ongoing assessment would guide its response and help develop measures to reduce the impact and recurrence of flooding in Oghara.
