Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Stronger Diplomatic Relations with Sierra Leone

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with Sierra Leone following the formal presentation of the Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Mrs. Ayo Luther-Ogbomode, to President Julius Maada Bio.

The development was announced by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement shared on its verified X handle on Monday.

The ceremony, held in Freetown, officially accredited Mrs. Luther-Ogbomode as Nigeria’s representative in Sierra Leone, enabling her to fully discharge her diplomatic responsibilities in the West African nation.

Following the presentation, the Nigerian envoy met with President Bio, where she conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between both countries.

According to the ministry, the High Commissioner also congratulated President Bio on his recent assumption of office as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), expressing confidence in his leadership of the regional bloc.

The ministry stated that Nigeria remains committed to deepening the historic bonds of friendship and brotherhood that have existed between the two countries for decades.

Nigeria and Sierra Leone have maintained strong diplomatic relations through their shared membership of ECOWAS, the African Union (AU) and the Commonwealth. Both countries have continued to collaborate in areas including regional peacekeeping, democratic governance, security, trade and economic development.

Nigeria also played a key role in restoring peace in Sierra Leone during the country’s civil war through the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG). Since the end of the conflict, successive Nigerian governments have continued to support Sierra Leone’s post-war reconstruction, democratic consolidation and institutional development.

The latest diplomatic engagement comes as Nigeria continues to pursue a foreign policy centred on regional stability, economic diplomacy and stronger cooperation among ECOWAS member states.

It also coincides with President Bio’s emergence as Chairman of ECOWAS, a position that places him at the forefront of efforts to address political, economic and security challenges facing West Africa.

The Federal Government reiterated that it remains committed to fostering stronger bilateral partnerships with African countries through enhanced political engagement, increased trade and investment, and sustained regional cooperation.
