Egungun Festival Kicks Off in Ibadan as Masquerades Pay Homage to Olubadan

The annual Egungun Festival in Ibadan officially opened on Sunday, June 21, with full public masquerade displays starting today.

Masquerades are moving through the ancient city to offer prayers and entertain residents, paying homage to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at the palace in Oke-Aremo.

They will also visit the Government House, Oje, Mapo, Oranyan, and other notable locations.The dreaded Oloolu masquerade is expected out from 4 PM until dawn for several days.

It is a strict taboo for women to cross paths with or look at Oloolu.Masquerades that have visited the palace include Ajofebo, Labo, Ido-Oro, Jalaruru, Siaba, and Ojo Weliweli. Ire Kosodo and Atipako are scheduled to visit later today.
