Argentina captain Lionel Messi has raised fresh fitness concerns ahead of the upcoming World Cup after being substituted during Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer encounter against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
According to reports by BBC Sport, the 38-year-old forward was taken off in the 73rd minute after appearing uncomfortable and holding the back of his left leg during the rain-soaked game in Miami.
Despite the scare, Messi was able to walk off the pitch without assistance before heading straight to the dressing room, reducing fears of a serious injury.

Inter Miami manager Guillermo Hoyos later explained that the substitution was mainly precautionary, stressing that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was exhausted due to the difficult playing conditions.
“As far as I know, we don’t have any medical report yet, but he was really fatigued,” Hoyos said after the match.
“He was tired, the pitch conditions were heavy, and whenever there is any doubt, it’s always better not to take risks.”
Messi has not officially confirmed whether he will play for Argentina at the next FIFA World Cup, though he is widely expected to feature in what could become his sixth appearance at the tournament a record-equalling feat.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, the Argentine superstar has managed his playing schedule carefully but has still struggled occasionally with hamstring-related injuries.
Argentina’s coaching crew are expected to monitor his fitness closely before finalising their World Cup squad.
