Federal authorities have activated the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund Overseas Scholarship Scheme application process, creating advanced study opportunities for Nigerian postgraduate students across the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.
Presidential Special Adviser on Social Media Dada Olusegun’s office confirmed the initiative Monday through an X (formerly Twitter) platform announcement.
“FG has announced the commencement of applications for 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarships overseas,” the post said.
According to scholarship board website documentation, the program targets Master of Science and PhD candidates pursuing disciplines aligned with oil and gas sector requirements, delivering comprehensive benefits encompassing tuition coverage, return flight arrangements, accommodation and living stipends, health insurance provision, and bench fees where applicable.
The PTDF statement said, “The 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships provide access to world-class training, research facilities, and global expertise, while developing indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.”
PhD applicants selecting United Kingdom destinations will participate through split-site arrangements, enabling research execution between the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), and designated UK partner institutions including Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, and University of Portsmouth.
The agency emphasized the scholarships’ highly competitive nature. “Only candidates who demonstrate outstanding merit and suitability will be considered,” the statement said, noting that applicant evaluation will incorporate academic credentials, research proposals, professional body memberships, and study relevance to oil and gas industry requirements.
MSc applicant prerequisites include minimum Second Class Lower (2.2) first degree achievement (or 2.1), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program completion, computer literacy demonstration, and five O’Level credits encompassing English Language and Mathematics. PhD applicants must additionally submit research proposals extending to five pages, outlining research objectives, methodological approaches, and data collection strategies.
“All applicants must ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified prior to application, and multiple applications or submission of falsified documents will result in automatic disqualification,” the PTDF statement added.
Prospective candidates should submit applications online at scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng for approved programs at PTDF partner institutions. The application deadline is 27th February.
The overseas scholarship initiative represents continued governmental investment in human capital development for Nigeria’s petroleum sector, addressing persistent skills gaps through international training exposure while building domestic research capacity through the split-site PhD model linking Nigerian institutions with global university partners.
However, the program’s oil and gas sector focus occurs amid global energy transition pressures and increasing emphasis on renewable energy development—raising questions about alignment between scholarship investments in fossil fuel expertise and evolving global energy landscapes that may require diversified skill profiles beyond traditional petroleum engineering and geoscience disciplines.
The split-site PhD arrangement particularly aims to strengthen Nigerian institutional research capabilities by facilitating knowledge transfer from established international universities to domestic institutions like CPESK, potentially enhancing local postgraduate training quality beyond individual scholarship recipients.
For eligible candidates, the comprehensive benefit package—covering tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and travel—removes substantial financial barriers to international postgraduate study, though the competitive selection process and strict eligibility requirements ensure only candidates with strong academic foundations and clear sectoral alignment secure awards.
The February deadline provides prospective applicants approximately six weeks for application preparation, document assembly, and NIN verification—a timeline requiring prompt action from interested candidates to meet submission requirements.
