Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Ruth Kadiri, has voiced concern over the rising cost of living in Nigeria, describing the increasing cost of feeding as a major burden on ordinary citizens.
Speaking in a video shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday, the actress said the current economic situation has become deeply troubling, noting that even basic food items now consume a significant portion of many Nigerians’ incomes.
Kadiri expressed worry that if people in relatively comfortable positions are beginning to feel the pressure, the situation may be far worse for low-income earners struggling to make ends meet.
“The cost of tomatoes is now so high. Somebody will use N5,000 to buy pepper and tomato, while another person is earning N25,000, N30,000, N40,000 or N50,000 monthly. The cost of feeding, which is basic, is now extremely high,” she said.
The actress also highlighted the psychological impact of economic hardship, warning that prolonged poverty and financial stress can negatively affect people’s mental well-being and relationships.
According to her, many Nigerians are becoming increasingly frustrated, and that frustration is often directed at family members and loved ones.

“Poverty affects the mind like cancer. It eats away at people. A lot of people are angry, not because they want to be, but because of the pressure they are under. They become angry at their wives, husbands and children,” she added.
Kadiri said she felt saddened by the struggles many Nigerians face daily and urged greater awareness of the challenges confronting ordinary citizens.
Her comments add to the growing list of public figures expressing concern over Nigeria’s economic conditions, rising food prices and the increasing cost of living across the country.
