A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel in Lagos State. She was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for allegedly dumping refuse in the drain during rainfall, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) disclosed in a statement on Thursday.
Monday was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted and sentenced accordingly.
LAWMA warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations, describing such acts as environmental offences that attract legal sanctions. The authority said it would continue working with enforcement agencies to identify and sanction offenders across Lagos, urging residents to dispose of waste responsibly through approved channels.
The development comes amid renewed efforts by the Lagos State Government to curb indiscriminate waste disposal practices that obstruct drainage channels and contribute to flooding.
