Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another person travelling in his vehicle.
The attack occurred on Thursday at about 5pm along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, said the assailants emerged from a nearby bush and opened fire on motorists.
According to her, a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later found abandoned on the highway.
Saliu said Yunusa, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead inside, while another occupant was forcibly taken into the bush by the attackers.
She said the police, working with other security agencies, had launched intensified operations in the area, including searches of surrounding forests, to rescue the abducted victim and arrest those responsible.

The police spokesperson added that Yunusa’s remains had been taken to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while investigators were following available leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed security personnel to sustain operations along the affected route and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The command also advised motorists and residents in the area to remain alert and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The latest incident comes amid renewed security concerns in the state. Recently, gunmen abducted some National Youth Service Corps members in Kogi, although the police later announced the rescue of 11 victims.
