Society of Nigerian Broadcasters Urges Media Professionals to Uphold Ethics of Broadcasting

Broadcast professionals have been urged to uphold the ethics and core values established by the founding fathers of broadcasting, describing the media as the fourth pillar of democracy with a crucial role in nation-building.

The charge was given by veteran broadcaster, journalist, writer, poet and lecturer, Chief Yemi Farounbi, during a courtesy visit by members of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) to the management of Accessible Publishers and Oxygen FM 96.9 in Ibadan.

Speaking during the visit, Chief Farounbi commended the proprietor of Oxygen FM 96.9 for establishing a radio station with a strong focus on educational programming and public enlightenment. He noted that the station’s commitment to promoting education is a commendable contribution to societal development.

He, however, urged the management of the station to remain committed to fairness, accuracy and truthfulness in its news coverage and reportage, particularly as political campaigns and electioneering activities gather momentum across the country.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Ibadan Chapter of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Mr. Seun Awodele, called on broadcast practitioners to work closely with the organisation in promoting professionalism and maintaining high ethical standards in the broadcasting industry.

According to him, the Society remains committed to strengthening professional competence among radio and television practitioners through continuous capacity building and mentorship.

Responding on behalf of the organisation, the Managing Director of Accessible Publishers and Proprietor of Oxygen FM 96.9, Mr. Adedapo Gbadega, expressed appreciation to the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters for the visit and for recognising the station’s efforts in promoting education through quality broadcasting.

He reaffirmed Oxygen FM’s commitment to delivering informative, educational and people-oriented programmes that contribute positively to the development of Oyo State and the nation at large.

In her remarks, the Head of Station, Mrs. Folakemi Tokunbo-Isola, pledged the station’s continued commitment to professionalism, fairness, balance and truth in news reporting, as well as excellence in programme production.

The Society of Nigerian Broadcasters also used the occasion to encourage young and aspiring broadcasters, including presenters, newscasters and newsreaders, to take advantage of the organisation’s training and mentorship opportunities to enhance their skills and build successful careers in the broadcasting industry.
