The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in the state to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, following the continued abduction of teachers and pupils.

The union said the industrial action is aimed at compelling the government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward the safe and unconditional release of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
In a statement jointly signed by the NUT Oyo State Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union expressed concern over the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils, describing the situation as disturbing and unacceptable.
According to the statement, the incident has created widespread fear among teachers and parents, undermining confidence in the safety of schools across the state. The union noted that many parents have become reluctant to send their children to school due to growing security concerns.

The NUT stated that the strike is intended to draw urgent attention to the plight of the abducted victims and to demand stronger action from the relevant authorities to secure their release.
The union called on all affected teachers to fully comply with the strike directive while remaining peaceful and law-abiding throughout the period of the industrial action.
It also reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, pledging to continue engaging government officials and security agencies until the victims are safely rescued and reunited with their loved ones.
