The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s history, symbolising the sacrifices, resilience, and determination of citizens who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance.
The ministry noted that Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the contributions of pro-democracy activists and national heroes whose efforts helped shape Nigeria’s democratic institutions and values.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening democracy through the promotion of the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, celebrate its progress, and renew their commitment to national unity, peace, and development.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 to honour the struggle for democratic rule and uphold the principles of freedom, justice, and good governance in Nigeria.
