BREAKING: Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor Francis Duru Dies at 57

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, with his family confirming the sad development in a statement released early Friday, October 23, 2026.

The family announced his passing through the actor’s official Instagram page, expressing appreciation to fans and well-wishers for their prayers, love and support. The statement also prayed for the peaceful repose of the late actor.

Duru, who began his acting career in 1989, gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Ahanna in the 1995 Nollywood classic Rattlesnake, produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. He went on to feature in numerous Nigerian films throughout a career spanning more than three decades.

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later moved to Nigeria and studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996. He was also recognised for his contributions to the entertainment industry, including winning the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

His death comes months after he publicly dismissed reports that he was battling a serious illness. In June 2026, a video showing the actor looking frail had circulated online, prompting concern among fans and colleagues. Duru subsequently described the reports surrounding the footage as false and malicious.

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, also confirmed the actor’s death, describing him as a great thespian. Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children.

His passing has left colleagues, fans and the wider Nollywood community mourning another veteran whose career contributed to the growth and development of Nigeria’s film industry. May his soul rest in peace.
