The Lagos State Government has inspected the CWAY water production facility following a viral social media video and complaints about the company’s products. The inspection, carried out by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) after a meeting with CWAY management, examined key production stages including bottle filling, capping, labelling and packaging, as well as transportation, storage and distribution procedures.
Officials found some plastic packaging materials considered unsuitable for use set aside for disposal; CWAY explained the discarded bottles are ground and sold to plastic industries as raw materials, with about 1,000 bottles discarded daily. LASCOPA’s Director of Scientific Investigation, Research and Development, Suluka Raheem, recommended that suitable handles be incorporated into bottles to reduce slippage, that CWAY establish an appropriate shelf-life for bottles and withdraw them from circulation after that period, and that distributor training be strengthened, particularly to avoid exposing products to direct sunlight during transportation.
Representing LASCOPA General Manager Afolabi Solebo, Board Secretary Arinola Momoh-Ayokanmbi urged CWAY to adopt internationally recognised standards for transportation, distribution and storage, and to address the inspection’s findings. LASCOPA said the exercise was conducted in line with its mandate to protect consumers and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and confidence in products sold across Lagos State.
