The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has expressed concern over reports that more than 200 operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network allegedly died while on active duty in the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC described the development as alarming and called on Governor Seyi Makinde to provide further details regarding the reported casualties.
The opposition party said the governor’s disclosure, made during a recent visit to Oriire Local Government Area following the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers, raised important questions about the welfare, safety, and operational conditions of Amotekun personnel.
According to the APC, the reported loss of such a large number of operatives underscores the need for greater attention to security challenges in the state and improved support for frontline security personnel.
The party also urged the state government to strengthen collaboration between the Amotekun Corps and federal security agencies, while ensuring adequate training, welfare packages, and safety measures for operatives.
Additionally, the APC called for transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths and appealed to the government to prioritise the protection of security personnel and residents across the state.
The party maintained that addressing insecurity requires a coordinated approach involving security experts, effective intelligence gathering, and stronger partnerships among all security stakeholders.
Governor Makinde had earlier disclosed that over 200 members of the Amotekun Corps had lost their lives in active service, though details surrounding the incidents were not provided at the time.
